Mr. Mike Hutton 

Mr. Mike Hutton MB BS BSc. FRSC (Trauma & Orthopaedics)

Mike was appointed as a Consultant Spine Surgeon at The Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital, United Kingdom in 2007. Mike has a wide practice in spine surgery undertaking complex spine procedures in all areas of the spine with varied pathological conditions including paediatric and adult spine deformity. His unit runs the popular international meetings Dilemmas in Deformity and The Sporting Spine.

Mike has been an elected member of the executive council of the British Association of Spine Surgeons (BASS) since 2012. He has developed the British Spine Registry which has become a national tool for collecting patient outcome measures in the United Kingdom and boasts 100,000 patients contributing to it. He has recently developed a national online emergency referral system for spinal surgical emergencies in England.

Mike was appointed as the National Clinical Spine Lead for the Department of Health NHS Improvement Programme. This National Audit, the ‘Getting it Right First Time (GIRFT)’ project involved Mike visiting 125 units in England with unique comparative datasets and the production of a national report aiming to improve the care of patients with spinal problems in England.

Mike was a professional rugby player from 1995 to 1998 representing Richmond, Middlesex, England U21’s and the Barbarians
